How do I Get red out of hair color?

I have had my hair professionally dyed by several people and now am doing it myself. My mom was a hairdresser and I am pretty familiar with it. My hair always pulls red. I want a light brown or dark blonde look. I last used Ion color brilliance 7 N and added red corrector. I tried using another soy brand AA from Sally's. Have been using 20 Vol. I hate the red. My hair is med/dark brown and little gray around the face. Do I need to strip it to get my results? HELP.
